Andy's Story
"I've been volunteering at the Croydon Skylight since the January of 2024. I wanted to volunteer for Crisis because I used to work for a homeless charity a while ago and am still passionate about supporting people who are homeless. Croydon Skylight being local to me was perfect.
“I was happy to do any role but being a facilitator for tea and chat group felt a good fit as I had done a similar thing before and knew the power that having a social group can have on people’s wellbeing and self esteem.”
“At Tea & Chat, we aim to provide a safe space and environment for members, encouraging then to express themselves through creativity and social interaction, ie, colouring pictures and engaging in conversation.”
"For several weeks we have also had open access to music in the form of a download which people like. We recently had a music quiz, which was well attended and enjoyed by members. One staff member and one volunteer alternate each week and provide refreshments, light snacks and beverages and welcome new and existing members."
“I enjoy volunteering with Crisis as it’s a great opportunity to interact with members and watch them come out of their shells and grow.”
By sharing stories we can change attitudes and build a movement for permanent, positive change. Stand against homelessness and help us end it for good.
