Last Friday, Chancellor Rishi Sunak, announced that housing benefit will be increased to cover at least the cheapest third of rents for the next 12 months in order to prevent homelessness in light of the coronavirus outbreak.
Our Cover the Cost campaign, launched last year, called for this to happen for the following three years and Crisis will campaign to make sure that this change is not rolled back after one year.
While we must of course see this within the context of the government’s response to coronavirus, this announcement would not have been possible without the work of the Cover the Cost campaign, putting our policy solutions high up on the UK Government’s agenda.
This is an incredible achievement and a big thank you is owed to all supporters, members, Crisis staff and the thousands of Crisis campaigners who helped the campaign reach this milestone.
Together, we have built the political will to strengthen our welfare safety net and will continue to pull together to help each other during the toughest of times.
