Volunteer with us this Christmas in Edinburgh

Every Christmas our centres provide vital services to people at one of the hardest times of the year. At Christmas and throughout the year, we help people directly out of homelessness, and campaign for the social changes needed to solve it altogether. We know that together we can end homelessness.

Be part of our team this Christmas, and together we will end homelessness for good.

By volunteering with Crisis you can make a real difference to people experiencing homelessness. Winter can be a particularly difficult time to be homeless. There are fewer support services available, over the Christmas period, and the cold weather can be brutal for anyone living on the streets. Each year we welcome people who may otherwise have no home of their own and nowhere else to go. Six out of ten people who are homeless experience loneliness and this can be more pronounced at Christmas. For many, our centres offer a chance to relax, regain confidence and plan for the future in a supportive environment, away from the immediate hardships of homelessness.

In Edinburgh, we are open to guests 25-28 December and 1 January.

General volunteer

***Please note- our General volunteer shifts are full for Christmas day, set-up and take-down. Please consider another role, such as the volunteer hub We have limited full-day spaces on other days (most of our 1/2 day shifts are now full). *** General volunteers are vital to the smooth running of Christmas. You will be joining in with a wide variety of tasks including playing games and chatting with guests, encouraging them to join in with workshops, cleaning duties, serving hot drinks, and clearing up at the end of the day. No experience needed, just a willingness to get involved and make a positive change this Christmas.

Welcome Team

***Please note, 1/2 day shifts in the Welcome team are full some days, including Christmas day*** Welcome Team volunteers are the first point of contact for our Christmas. It’s important that all our guests receive a warm welcome and introduction to the event, as well as understanding the house rules. It is beneficial to have good judgement, emotional intelligence and to be confident and assertive. The team is outside most of the time, so will need to wrap up warmly, but there will be lots of breaks to warm up inside with a hot drink. Welcome team volunteers need to be 21 years or over.

Christmas can be a difficult time for our guests. We are looking for volunteers with a background in mental health, counselling, social work etc to provide extra support for those who might need it. We're happy to hear your more unusual ideas, one of last years highlights was Beekeeping! (with a dormant hive).
