Wellbeing Wednesdays: photography winners announced!
24.03.2021
Wednesdays will never be the same again. For 5 weeks in February and March a diverse group of training graduates from across our network met online to explore the 5 Ways to Wellbeing with a hospitality twist. We made space for each of the five ways in every session - to Connect, Be Active, Keep learning, Take notice, Give - and learnt strategies to keep feeling well even after the series finished.
Thank you to everyone who shared an image for the photography challenge, to Tom for setting the challenge and for giving such great tips. We were bowled over by beautiful entries, giving such an honest insight into people’s lives and which embodied Tom’s brief “to shoot one, or all, of the five stages of wellbeing.” Find the exhibition of photos here.

Here’s some highlights selected by the team who delivered Wellbeing Wednesday:
‘Shoes on a bench’ by Massimo
“This reminds me of days playing in the park. There is a mystery to it, we do not know why the shoes are on the bench. Are there two children playing in some sand in their socks? Or maybe the shoes were left on the bench for other people to use. Whatever the reason, the photo brings joy and hope and definitely can be put into the 'active', 'take notice' and possibly 'give' categories of the 5 Ways to Wellbeing.”
Brian Beaton, House of St Barnabas
You win a £15 Just Eat voucher
‘Keep learning and hip shimmy’ by Taru
“This makes me think of connecting in unusual and unexpected ways and has movement and humour as part of the composition!”
Charlie Atkinson, Crisis UK
You win £15 to spend in any Crisis Shop, Café or Coffee bar
‘Light’ by Kevin and ‘Yellow Sky’ by Thomas
“I love the way they have both 'taken notice' of the light in the scene and captured it so beautifully in their picture. A ray of light in what has been a pretty dark time for many people.”
Amanda Hill, Beyond Food Foundation
Kevin, you win a bumper pack by Extract Coffee – includes an AeroPress coffee maker
Thomas, you win a copy of Beyond Food’s Feast with Purpose cookbook
‘Spiderman walks towards the light’ by Gemma
“The composition feels so perfect – the dog carefully in shot, spiderman striding bravely ahead on a mission, the grown-up legs of a mystery extra frame the image, is it an unsuspecting passer by or someone our walking with you? And yet, through it all, the sun’s rays stretch towards us – like the light we need at the end of a very long tunnel.
Your description of connecting with a friend to borrow their dog, to be active by taking it for walk, which you did to take notice of the small things for this challenge, and how much you enjoyed learning different ways to take photos really stuck with me. This image will be one of my favourite legacies of Wellbeing Wednesdays. Thank you so much for the gift of it.
Sarah Holtam, Crisis UK
You win this, or another of your entries, printed on board for the wall
‘Paddy’ by Sana
“We love the composition and the calming tones of blue in this photograph. We feel this represents the 'connect' element of the 5 Ways to Wellbeing as looking at it, we feel really connected to the sea and sky and the lovely dog reminded of us of the special connection we can have with animals.”
Zoe Milihan & Dana Sandrock, Hotel School
You win a pamper pack of hotel goodies
‘Music Legends of Eel Pie Island’ by Jay
“This photo made me think differently about ‘connect’ and reminded me that connections with our environments, with the past and with our own personal histories are so important. I loved Jay’s imaginative take on this photo challenge, and even better, I learnt about a magical island in the Thames which I have been inspired to visit when lockdown eases.”
Ceri Sheppard, House of St Barnabas
You win this, or another of your entries, printed on board for the wall
‘Old cabbage, new sprouts’ and ‘What a Black Swan Event! – Pandemic’ by Julie
“Your image of ‘Old cabbage New sprouts’ was beautifully caught – with lovely light on it and with such a positive message too. That really got me. Your ‘What a Black Swan Event! – Pandemic’ really brought it home and have nailed what this experience has meant. I was really grateful to see and feel that. Thank you so much for sharing what you did.”
Tom Oldham, multi-award winning photographer
