Crisis responds to government measures to protect people experiencing domestic abuse

Today, Saturday 11th April, the government announced new measures to protect people experiencing domestic abuse during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Responding to the announcement Hannah Gousy, Head of Policy and Campaigns at Crisis, said: “It’s good to see the government finally recognising the impact the outbreak is having on people experiencing domestic abuse. But it’s deeply disappointing that there is no clear strategy on how people will be helped into a safe home.

“The virus has laid bare that people experiencing domestic abuse do not have a right to safe housing. As a society how can we let this happen?

“Ensuring survivors of domestic abuse have safe and stable housing is an essential measure now and always. It’s vital that the government lifts the legal barriers stopping people who are homeless, because of domestic abuse, from accessing a safe home as a matter of urgency.”
