Mercy's Story
“Crisis is the most important organisation I have ever worked with and choosing to volunteer with them is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I think it is important to give back to the community, I find it grounding and it helps put things into perspective for me. It also makes you feel good about what you do, no matter how big or small.”
“I am a Welcome and Reception Volunteer at Skylight London, which involves meeting and greeting, signing in members and making them drinks, assisting the Engagement and Assessment Team with admin and ad-hoc tasks and helping make the reception area a clean, warm and welcoming place for all our members and visitors.”
“I get so much out of my volunteering and look forward to it each week. The team is incredible, supportive and it makes it worthwhile. We have moments of laughter and joy even though it can be challenging at times. When you treat people who find themselves in difficult situations with respect and dignity, it gives them hope.”
“I had to leave my volunteering role a while ago due to work commitments but decided to return last year as I had some time off and felt that there was more I could do. Homelessness has no expiration date - it’s a continuum and there is more work to be done to help put an end to homelessness for good. Times are hard and more people need help and support so, if I can, I will continue to volunteer in the fight to help Crisis carry out their vital work. We can all do a little bit if the will is there. Volunteering isn’t just a tick-off thing for me, it means a lot to me, as does the Skylight team and the work of Crisis.”
By sharing stories we can change attitudes and build a movement for permanent, positive change. Stand against homelessness and help us end it for good.
