Crisis responds to new £40m homelessness fund
17.10.2016
The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has announced a new funding programme for local areas to reduce homelessness.
Responding to the announcement, Jon Sparkes, Chief Executive of Crisis, the national charity for homeless people, said:
"We welcome this significant investment in reducing and preventing homelessness. The homelessness crisis is getting worse, with official figures last month showing a further rise in the problem - so serious action can't come soon enough.
"The focus on prevention and early intervention as well as supporting people to find a quick and sustainable route out of homelessness, and on gathering evidence about what works, are all essential to ending homelessness.
"However, programmes like this can only ever have a limited impact if not backed up with a change in the law to make sure everyone who is homeless is entitled to help. That's why we're also calling on government to support Bob Blackman MP's Homelessness Reduction Bill ahead of its second reading on 28 October. The Bill is a major opportunity to improve the rights of people currently shut out of the system, whist continuing to protect families with children from homelessness."
