Homelessness charity Crisis issues urgent call for donations as temperatures plummet

  • Unworn men’s clothing including winter coats and warm socks in high demand this year
  • The charity is also seeking volunteers to help support people facing homelessness this Christmas

Crisis, the national homelessness charity, has issued an urgent call for donations to its South Wales Skylight Centre as temperatures plummet this week.

Staff at Crisis’ South Wales Skylight say the cost of living crisis and rising rents continue to push more and more people into homelessness.

As temperatures fall, the charity is gearing up for another difficult winter. In particular, the charity says many people coming through its doors are in urgent need of warm winter clothing and the charity is calling for donations to help.

Based on St Helen’s Road in Swansea, the charity is accepting drop-in donations Monday to Friday between 9am and 4pm right up until the 20th December. Alternatively, donors can check out the charity’s wish list.

Donations will be sorted and passed to Crisis members to provide much needed warmth, food and toiletries to people experiencing homelessness this winter.

Ashella Lewis, Director of Crisis Skylight South Wales, said: “Homelessness is hard at any time of the year, but it’s especially dangerous during the winter months when temperatures plummet.

“Our members are facing extremely difficult situations, living in poor conditions without heating or trying to stay warm and dry while outside in the bitterly cold weather.

“Being able to offer people things like warm food, coats and socks makes a huge difference, but it’s only through the generosity of our supporters that we are able to do so.

“We know times are incredibly tough for everyone, that’s why we’re immensely grateful to anyone who can donate items this winter.”

Among other roles, the charity is looking for entertainers to volunteer to bring extra sparkle to the Christmas party at the Skylight in Swansea in late December, hairdressers who are willing to offer their services, and people who are willing to make crucial food deliveries.
