Crisis responds to housing and homelessness announcements in the Budget

Responding to the Budget, Matt Downie, Crisis Chief Executive, said: “This budget is a hugely promising step forward as we work to address the twin crises of housing and homelessness. With over a quarter of a million households across Britain experiencing the worst forms of homelessness, the Chancellor’s decision to increase funding for councils - as well as much needed investment in social housing and additional support for housing costs - will be vital in preventing more people from being forced into the trauma of homelessness.

“We cannot end homelessness without genuinely affordable homes. While today’s investment puts us on a path to addressing this the reality is that until we’re building 90,000 social homes every year, thousands of children will continue to wake up in poor quality temporary accommodation. To deliver true change and provide stable growth for this country, it’s crucial that the plans to invest in social housing align with the delivery of the cross-government strategy to end homelessness. Only then will we see one of the greatest social injustices of our time ended for good."
