Volunteer Counsellor - London

Role outline and the difference you will make

Crisis Skylight London is a dynamic art, education, training and employment centre in East London. We run more than 100 free workshops, classes and drop-in sessions every week in all sorts of subjects - music, art, maths, IT, theatre, exercise and more. 

The counselling service sits within the Wellbeing Team and is a free and confidential service for members.  We provide weekly sessions for up to 12 weeks.  Members benefit greatly from a trusting relationship as they work towards positive change. 

What you will gain

  • Regular supervision, support and guidance from the Wellbeing and Mental Health Manager
  • Clinical supervision with an external supervisor, paid for by Crisis
  • Support for general volunteering matters from the Volunteer Coordinator

  • Travel expenses (within Greater London) reimbursed.   

Core tasks and what you will achieve

  • Deliver at least 2 counselling sessions per week lasting 50 minutes (on a weekday, times and day to be discussed)
  • Provide counselling for a maximum caseload of 2 clients at any one time, referred to you by the Wellbeing and Mental Health Manager or the Mental Health Coordinator
  • Complete records of attendance and session notes, and store them securely at Skylight
  • Signpost Members to sessions on the Skylight timetable, or to the Progression Team for additional support, as appropriate
  • Adhere to the ethical guidelines of your affiliated professional body (e.g. BACP, UKCP)
  • Attend regular clinical supervision sessions, provided by Crisis
  • Attend supervisions provided by the Mental Health and Wellbeing Manager
  • Complete a DBS check before starting (or have had DBS check in last 12 months)
  • Attend training when requested by Mental health and Wellbeing manager

The skills & experience we are looking for

  1. Recognised professional counselling / psychotherapy qualification.
  2. Member of BACP or UKCP
  3. BACP/UKCP counsellor accreditation or working towards accreditation (Crisis can provide advice and support around accreditation)
  4. A commitment to continued professional development
  5. Understanding of issues relating to homelessness, or willingness to learn
  6. Experience of working with people with a range of mental health issues (ideally as a counsellor, key worker, coach or support worker etc.)
  7. Reliable and excellent timekeeper
  8. Friendly and approachable, with excellent communication skills
  9. Ability to use clinical supervision effectively
  10. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
